Did you know that Dave is now one of the most appreciated men in rock today? You knew that. That
Kurt is dead? You knew that, too. BUT DID YOU KNOW THAT KRIST IS NOW A BALD FARMER LIVING IN WASHINGTON? No, you didn't
know that!! Trust the bassist.
Nirvana were originally only high school friends Kurt Cobain (guitar, vocals)
and Krist Novoselic (bass). They jammed together and in 1989 formed Nirvana, along with drummer Chad Channing, mixing their
old-school punk influences with meliodic grunge and edgy vocals. Their debut album "Bleach" came out in 1990, not making a
that much of a huge impact on the music scene at that time.
Chad Channing left soon after and Nirvana took new drummer
Dave Grohl on board who had played in a few bands beforehand, Scream to name but a few. Their following album, "Nevermind",
shot to the top of the Billboard Charts all over the world, turning the shadowed grunge band from the small town of Aberdeen,
Washington, into the limelight. With a vast and still growing fan-base, press at every turn and no privacy from the media,
Cobain began to loathe his band and himself.
Their third album was "In Utero", a much darker and rawer CD, but the truthful
and daringly honest lyrics were still the same. Around that same time, Kurt Cobain turned started experimenting with
drugs and married Courtney Love (from the pop/rock band Hole). His demise was sudden: On 5th April 1994, Cobain's body was
discovered in the room above his garage. The immediate reaction was "suicide", although some fingers were pointed
at Love for murder.
Grohl went on to form Foo Fighters, whereas Novoselic released an album with
his own band, Sweet 75, but this, however, wasn't a success, so Novoselic retired from music altogether. Nirvana were parhaps
the most influencial band of the last few decades- the fact that they bought unheard of, underground music into the
mainstream was something to remember. But that fact alone was partly what drove Cobain to loathe the world around him.
