80s indie icons, centred around the lyrical talents of singer Morrissey and the amazing compositions of guitarist Johnny Marr. The clutch of albums and singles they produced in their brief career were of a quality rarely surpassed in English pop.

In my (Inderjit) opinion, they were the start of "emo", if you like- depressing, slower rock, low self-esteem yet incredibly witty and funny lyrics. Get Louder than Bombs, it's amazing! Some other albums are Meat is Murder, The Queen is Dead and Strangeways, Here we Come. Since the band's demise in '87, Morrissey has a quite successful solo career, but I still prefer The Smiths. If you like Morrissey, however, you'll LOVE The Smiths!
